Besuch des Shedd Aquariums - Vist of the Shedd Aquarium

Mein Geburtstag ist vorbei und mein neues Lebensjahr hat begonnen. Am 15. hatten wir schon ein wenig mit Vanillekuchen mit Erdbeeren sowie Sahne und einem schönen Brettspieleabend bei unseren Nachbarn gefeiert, aber am Freitag ging es dann für Eirik und mich noch ins Aquarium, was ich schon länger besuchen wollte :) Wir waren den ganzen Tag unterwegs und am Abend noch bei unserem japanischen Lieblingsrestaurant essen. Ich hatte einen tollen Geburtstag und einen schönen "Nach"-Geburtstag dazu :D Hier noch ein paar ausgewählte Bilder aus dem Aquarium!

My birthday is over and my new year of life has begun. On the 15th we enjoyed some vanilla spongecake with strawberries as well as whipped cream and also celebrated at our neighbour's place with a boardgame evening... but that wasn't all, because I really wanted to visit the aquarium and so I went with Eirik on friday to see it :) We spend almost all day there and afterwards in the evening we had a great time at our favorite Japanese restaurant. I had a great birthday and the "after"birthday day was great as well :D Here is a small selecation of pictures we took at the aquarium.

Ein bisschen Winter - A little bit of winter

In den letzten Tagen ist endlich der erste Schee hier in Chicago gefallen, welcher auch liegen geblieben ist. Leider ist er sehr trocken, weshalb es bisher nur für die erste Schneeballschlacht, aber noch nicht den ersten Schneemann gereicht hat. In den nächsten Tagen sollte sich der Schnee allerdings so verändern, dass man daraus auch einen Schneemann machen kann :)

Bei eisigen Temperaturen schlägt mein Herz bekanntlich höher und deshalb war ich am Dienstag auch für eine Weile in der Innenstadt unterwegs! Die kalten Temperaturen haben eindeutig mehrere Vorteile... Weniger Menschen sind draußen und der Dreck der Großstadt wird vom reinen, weißen Schnee überdeckt. Hier in Chicago hat sogar der Fluss angefangen zu frieren und auch geschützte Ecken am See zeigen das erste Eis. Leider gibt es auch Nachteile, die mit dem kalten Wetter daherkommen :/ Die Amerikaner streuen Unmengen von Salz, was vielleicht damit zusammenhängt, dass niemand verklagt werden will, falls jemand fällt? Leider ist das mehr als schlecht für meine Schuhe! Ebenso hatten wir die letzten beiden Tage Stromausfall. Bei -25°C bis -15°C war das eine frostige Erfahrung. Mit nur 10°C in der Wohnung war es ein wenig kalt - besonders in der Nacht! Aber jetzt haben wir einen Stromgenerator... bis die Leitungen wieder funktionieren. Uns geht es also gut :)

In the last few days the first snow has fallen in Chicago, that also stayed on the ground. Unfortunately the snow is very dry, which means that it was good enough for our first snowball fight, but that it is not good enough to built a snowman. But I believe that the snow will change over the next days and maybe then we can built a snowman out of it :)

With icy temperatures my heart beats faster, because I am happy and I had a short trip to downtown on tuesday to have a look at the snowy citycenter. There are quite a few benefits with the cold weather... Not so many people dare to go out and the streets are nicely empty. Also you don't see the dirt of the big city, because everything is covered with a white and pure coat of snow. The Chicago River as well as some parts of the lake started freezing and it looks great! Besides the advantages of course there are also some disadvantages. The Americans use sh*tloades of salt to cover the sidewalks. Maybe it is because they are so afraid of being sued, because someone could fall and get hurt? At least I am not happy with all the salt, because it ruins my leatherboots. Also we had a blackout over the last two day. That was a frosty experience, because the temperatures were between -25°C and -15°C. In our apartment we still had about 10°C, but it was especially cold in the night. Now luckily we have a generator, until they repair the wires. We are okay for now :)

Gute Vorsätze und Weihnachtsbäume aus aller Welt - New Year's resolution and Christmas trees from all over the world!

Das neue Jahr hat begonnen und ich hoffe, dass ihr alle ein schönes Silvester hattet :) Nun wird es natürlich auch Zeit mit den guten Vorsätzen fürs neue Jahr zu beginnen. Mein erster Vorsatz ist den Blog auch in English zu schreiben. Vielleicht kann ich mir dann im nächsten Jahr vornehmen ihn auch noch ins Norwegische zu übersetzen ;)

Silvester haben wir dieses Jahr mit unseren Nachbarn aus Brasilien bei einem amerikanischen Arbeitskollegen von Eirik verbracht. Es war ein schöner Abend und wir konnten unsere Tradition - Dinner for One zu schauen - mit den anderen teilen. Beim Feuerwerk wurde dann reichlich gespart und wir haben fast nichts gesehen, obwohl wir eine klare Nacht hatten und aus dem 14. Stock den ganzen Süden von Chicago überblicken konnten. Feuerwerk an Silvester ist leider keine amerikanische Tradition :(

Nichtsdestotrotz hat das neue Jahr begonnen und mit vielen guten Vorsätzen hoffe ich, dass es ein Tolles wird :) Zuerst einmal möchte ich die restliche Zeit in Chicago gut überstehen und vielleicht besucht uns der ein oder andere noch! *zwinker* Danach geht es zurück nach Tromsø, um endlich Freunde sowie Familien wiederzusehen und einen 37,5 Stunden pro Woche Job finden! Ich hoffe ihr habt euch auch einiges vorgenommen und noch mehr hoffe ich, dass ihr alles auch schafft!

Als Letztes möchte ich euch einen kleinen Überblick über die Ausstellung: "Weihnachtsbäume aus aller Welt" im Museum für Wissenschaft und Industrie, welche wir gestern besucht haben, geben. Die Bäume wurden von ethnischen Gruppen aus dem jeweiligen Land, die in Chicago leben, gestaltet und sollen jeweils Traditionen sowie die Kultur darstellen. Leider habe ich nicht von jedem der 50 (!) ein tolles Foto machen können... aber ich hoffe ihr erkennt die Bäume trotzdem!

The new year just began and I hope everyone had a great New Year's Eve :) Of course now it is also time to follow the New Year's resolutions. My first resolution is, that I want to write my blog not just in German, but also in English. Maybe for next year's resolutions I will plan to add Norwegian as well.

This New Year's Eve we spend with our neighbours from Brazil at the apartment of an American colleague from Eirik. It was a great evening and we could also share one of our traditions on New Year's Eve - watching "Dinner for One" before the countdown. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of firworks to gaze at. The night was clear and we could overlook quite a bit of the south of Chicago from the 14. floor, but it is just not an American tradtition to blow up a lot of fireworks on New Year's Eve.

Nonetheless the new year has started and with all my resolutions I hope it will be a good one. First I have to come through with the remaining time in Chicago and maybe someone wants to visit us here in the meanwhile *wink, wink*. Afterwards we will return to Tromsø and finally can see our friends and family again. Then I will try to find a regular 37,5 hour job... it is about time! I hope everyone also made great plans and even more I hope you are able to achieve them in the new year.

Last I want to share a small overview with you over the exhibit Eirik and I visited yesterday. It was called: "Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light". Basically the museum displayed 50 Christmas trees from all over the world and they were decorated by ethnic groups from the respective country, but which live in Chicago. Unfortunately some of the pictures did not turn out great, but I hope you can enjoy them nonetheless!
